Reading a quote
A fair quote for a replacement names the tank by make, model and capacity, says whether it is bunded, and states plainly whether the base, the supply pipe and fire valve, removal of the old tank and disposal of any sludge are included.
It should also say who certifies the work. An installer on a competent person scheme such as OFTEC registers it for you; otherwise building control fees are yours to pay on top. Ask about VAT and about how long the new tank's warranty runs.
Where the tank cannot sit 1.8 metres from the house or 760 millimetres from a boundary, the quote will include a fire wall or a fire-protected tank. Our oil tank regulations page explains why.

Price ranges are summarised by us from three UK cost guides dated 2024 to 2026, read November 2026. They are national figures; rural areas a long way from installers can be higher. None of the guides states VAT clearly.
Cost questions
How much does it cost to replace an oil tank in the UK?
Most homes pay £1,900 to £4,500 for a bunded tank supplied and fitted with the old one taken away. A typical 1,200 litre bunded plastic tank comes in around £2,500.
Why do quotes for the same tank vary so much?
Access, the state of the base and the pipe run make most of the difference. A tank carried through a house or over a wall, or a new base laid from scratch, can add several hundred pounds.
Is VAT included in oil tank prices?
Often it is unclear. Tank firms registered for VAT charge 20% on top, and some small sole traders are not registered at all, so two prices that look far apart may be closer than they seem. Tick the VAT box in the estimator to see how much it adds.
Are there grants for replacing an oil tank?
There is no national grant for a like-for-like oil tank at the time of writing. Grants for heating usually support a switch away from oil, such as a heat pump, rather than a new tank.
How much is it to remove an old oil tank?
About £250 to £600 on its own. In a replacement it is usually part of the price.
What does a bigger tank cost to run?
Nothing extra in itself, but plan for a yearly service by an OFTEC-registered technician, typically £80 to £150 with the boiler, and an oil level monitor if you want one (£50 to £200).

Get a quote for your oil tank
Three steps: the postcode, the tank, and how to reach you. It takes a couple of minutes at most.
We are a free introduction service, not an installer. We find an OFTEC-registered tank installer who covers your postcode and tell you their name; that firm only hears from us once you give the go-ahead.
Got it. Your tank details are with us.
- Within a working day we look for an OFTEC-registered installer covering your area and let you know who it is.
- If you are happy, that one firm gets your details. If not, they go nowhere.
- The installer checks the base, the distances and the access, then gives you a written price. We never send marketing.
