Steel oil tank replacement

Older steel tanks rust from the inside out. Water settles under the oil, the bottom plates thin, and the first sign is often a damp patch beneath the tank or a smell after a delivery. By then the tank is past saving.

A new bunded steel tank fitted costs about £2,600 to £3,800 for a typical home and up to £5,500 for 2,500 litres. Many owners switch to bunded plastic at the same time, which saves a few hundred pounds.

Signs a steel tank needs replacing

  • Rust on the underside or the bottom seams, or flakes on the base below.
  • Weeping at welds, the outlet valve or the sludge valve.
  • Dark staining on the brick piers or the ground around them.
  • The tank stands on old brick piers that have cracked or shifted.
  • It sits inside a masonry bund that has cracked or holds rainwater.

How we got these figures

The figures above are our own bands, drawn from three UK cost guides dated 2024 to 2026 and checked in November 2026. They describe the country as a whole rather than your county, and the guides leave VAT unclear, so when quotes arrive check whether each one adds it. Budget with them; the installer's written price is the one that counts.

Steel again, or plastic this time?

Steel tanks were the standard for decades, so many rural homes still have one, often on brick piers and sometimes inside a brick bund. Once yours gives out, you can go back to steel or move over to bunded plastic.

Reasons to stay with steel

Steel is stronger against knocks from vehicles and machinery, which matters on farmyards and drives. It does not burn, which gives a little more flexibility near outbuildings, though the distance rules still apply. Large and unusual sizes, and tanks for commercial or farm use, are often steel. A modern bunded steel tank is galvanised or painted and built to last as long as plastic if it is kept painted.

Reasons to switch to plastic

Bunded plastic tanks cost less, need almost no upkeep and cannot rust. For an ordinary house with a garden tank, plastic is what most installers fit. If the tank is in full sun all day, ask about models with better UV protection, or shade it with a screen that keeps the required distances.

The old steel tank

Steel tanks are heavy and often have a layer of sludge and water in the bottom. The installer drains them, cuts them into sections on site and takes them for scrap. If there is a brick bund, decide early whether it stays: an empty bund wall left standing is just a garden wall, but one that blocks access or sits where the new base should go needs breaking out, which adds time and cost.

The ground beneath

A steel tank that has wept for years can leave oil in the soil. If the ground smells of oil or the piers are stained, raise it before the new base goes down. The Environment Agency notes that spills reaching ground or water can cost tens of thousands of pounds to clean up, and some home insurance does not cover it. Replacing a steel tank

Usually one day; two if a bund wall is broken out and a new base laid.

  1. Inspect

Condition of the tank, piers, bund and soil; best position for the new tank.

  2. Drain and cut

Oil saved where possible, sludge removed, tank cut into sections and loaded.

  3. Base

Piers removed, bund broken out if needed, new non-combustible base laid.

  4. Fit and certify

New tank set, supply and fire valve connected, tested and signed off.

Steel oil tank questions

How long do steel oil tanks last?

Around 20 years is a fair guide, longer if painted regularly and kept free of water. Many older tanks have outlived that, which is why so many are now failing.

Can a rusty steel oil tank be repaired?

Surface rust on top can be treated and painted. Rust on the bottom plates or seams means the metal is thinning from inside, and replacement is the safe answer.

Is steel better than plastic for an oil tank?

Neither is better everywhere. Steel resists impact and suits farms and large sizes; plastic is cheaper, cannot rust and suits most gardens.

What happens to an old steel oil tank?

It is drained, cut up on site and taken for scrap metal by a registered waste carrier. You can check any carrier on GOV.UK: find a registered waste carrier.

Do I need to remove the old brick bund?

Only if it is in the way of the new tank or the access. Otherwise it can stay as a wall, but it no longer counts as containment.

Three steps: the postcode, the tank, and how to reach you. It takes a couple of minutes at most.

We are a free introduction service, not an installer. We find an OFTEC-registered tank installer who covers your postcode and tell you their name; that firm only hears from us once you give the go-ahead.
